On the ice-nucleating potential of warm hydrometeors in mixed-phase clouds

چکیده
The question whether or not the presence of warm hydrometeors in clouds may play a significant role nucleation new ice particles has been debated for several decades. While early works Fukuta and Lee (1986) Baker (1991) indicated that it might be irrelevant, more recent study Prabhakaran et al. (2019) [arXiv:1906.06129] suggested otherwise. In this work, we are aiming to quantify ice-nucleating potential using high-fidelity flow simulation techniques around single hydrometeor use favorable considerations upscale effects collective clouds. find enhanced vicinity by orders magnitude affected volume air is much larger than previously estimated, very unlikely effect alone causes rapid enhancement observed some types clouds, mainly due low initial volumetric concentration. Nonetheless, implement into existing cloud models order investigate second-order such as nucleus preactivation after onset glaciation.

Spaceborne lidar observations of the ice-nucleating potential of dust, polluted dust, and smoke aerosols in mixed-phase clouds
Previous laboratory studies and in situ measurements have shown that dust particles possess the ability to nucleate ice crystals, and smoke particles to some extent as well. Even with coatings of pollutants such as sulphate and nitrate on the surface of dust particles, it has been shown that polluted dust particles are still able to nucleate ice in the immersion, deposition, condensation, and c...

Relative Humidity in Liquid, Mixed-Phase, and Ice Clouds
The results of in situ observations of the relative humidity in liquid, mixed, and ice clouds typically stratiform in nature and associated with mesoscale frontal systems at temperatures 45°C Ta 5°C are presented. The data were collected with the help of instrumentation deployed on the National Research Council (NRC) Convair-580. The length of sampled in-cloud space is approximately 23 10 km. T...
